Older adults

The Barnsley Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service is working in partnership with Age UK Barnsley to encourage older individuals in Barnsley to raise awareness of their mental wellbeing and access talking therapies. Despite increased openness towards mental health discussions, some older people still maintain the traditional view of being reserved about discussing their emotions. The partnership aims to challenge these views and emphasize the need to discuss mental health issues such as low mood, anxiety, and worry.
Life events such as bereavement, loneliness, health problems, and financial difficulties can impact mental wellbeing, regardless of age. The IAPT service is a free and confidential NHS service that provides support to help individuals manage their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, so they can cope with life’s challenges effectively. This includes assessments, one-to-one support, group workshops, and referrals to relevant agencies.
Individuals can self-refer to the IAPT service via the website or by contacting a member of the admin team. GP or nursing staff can also refer individuals to the service. If you have previously used the IAPT service and would like to try again, this is possible. Access the conversation about your mental wellbeing today and receive the support you need.
